Quetiapine, an atypical antipsychotic that is primarily used as a mood stabilizer, has been shown to have significant effects on the risk of suicide in patients with major depressive disorder. However, there are several reasons why antipsychotics such as quetiapine, olanzapine, and risperidone have been found to have potential risks and should be considered when prescribing these drugs to patients who are not responding to other medications for the same disorder. In general, the risk of suicidal ideation and behavior in patients receiving antipsychotic medication has been determined to be 1 in 1000 (1 in 2000). It is also important to note that the overall risk of suicidal ideation and behavior may be lower in patients with major depressive disorder compared to other depressive disorders.
